about

This is our first album with just the two of us. We have been playing together since we were 15 years old, so there's a great deal of trust and patience in our sound together. This album is mostly our originals, and the songs vary from slow ballad to post-bop and free. Tony is featured and brings his full spectrum of heart, intellect and saxophonic fluency. Jessica is on piano, providing a foundation for the journey. We pay homage to Connie Crothers with her bebop masterpiece "Bird's Word" as a saxophone duet, and Tony brings some heart wrenching tone and texture to the ballad "I Thought About You."

If you are the kind of person who wants to read more, here are some comments about it from writers and from us:

At the center of both Jessica and Tony’s creative world is their musical and emotional bond, a connection that manifests palpably throughout Hearing Into the Future.

The result is a singular encounter that ranges across the jazz continuum. But the focus is less on specific material than the fine-grained quality of the conversation, a dialogue that in the words of longtime Bay Area jazz DJ Alisa Clancy, “feels like a couple of tipsy people declarin’ their love….great!”

For anyone who knows Tony through his various free-form projects and recordings, Hearing Into the Future might come as a surprise, but he’s quick to point out that he was weaned with the whole spectrum of the jazz legacy. “It was always present in the house, always playing, either on the radio or on records,” he says. “My mom was a huge fan of Lester Young and Billie Holiday, and Lester was the main guy early on. I started off playing tenor because of Lester at 11-years-old - that was the sound I heard in my head, and the sound I wanted to produce.”

“My phrasing is heavily influenced by people like Billie Holiday and other singers, not just jazz, but R&B,” he says. “That was also something that I grew up with. I have a great love for the sound of the human voice.”

“We work together on our music and this recording represents a little bit of the way we delve into the jazz lineage, how we find our way into songs we’ve known our whole lives,” Jessica says. “This is about the intimacy of the two of us playing together for nearly 50 years.”
